Leaders: Marisa Christensen Schmidt and Gloria Soja

Participating in the Foster and Adoptive Family Camp experience at Camp Mimanagish this summer means savoring peaceful moments in nature surrounded by the smell of pine and the sound of the nearby rushing Boulder River. Time in nature has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety to boost mental health, and there is no place on earth providing a better view. Unplug with other Foster and Adoptive families to connect and share your wealth of knowledge.  While children are engaged in supervised fun camp activities with other children, parents will have a time to enjoy networking with parents.  Foster and Adoptive Family Camp will provide opportunities for both separate and combined programing for parents and children and promises to allow time to recharge your soul.

Co-Leader Gloria Soja brings a unique perspective to this camp, as highly self-aware adoptee who understands how her early adverse childhood experiences impacted the relationship she had with her adoptive parents and created challenges for her as a young person. Most of her professional experience comes from her 17+ years working in the criminal justice system, over half of which involved working with adjudicated youth and runaways.  Gloria is a certified Circle of Security-Parenting facilitator (www.circleofsecurityinternational.com), a certified Question, Persuade, Refer instructor (qprinstitute.com), and a suicide bereavement support facilitator. She is eternally grateful to her bio-mom, to her foster parents, and to her adoptive parents, for their sacrifices and their love.

Co-Leader Marisa Christensen Schmidt has a long history at Mimanagish and is delighted to come back to lead this event! She has been a foster parent and understands the journey’s challenges and joys. Professionally, she has worked in Early Childhood Education for 20 plus years and currently owns and operates a small preschool. She also works as a Literacy Coach for the Dickinson Public School District in Dickinson, ND.  She’s looking forward to leading some exciting activities with the children and families at this Camp.
