Hiking & Fishing Camp

August 23, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - August 27, 2023 @ 2:00 pm MDT

Come and fish, or hike, or some of each! Mark MacLeod and Dick Weaver will lead you on adventures only the Boulder River Valley can offer.

All ages welcome, but anyone under 18 needs to come with a parent or guardian.

Fishing Leader: Mark MacLeod

The Boulder River is well-known for excellent fishing, and Mark MacLeod will be on hand to help. You can head out on the river on your own or hone your fly-fishing skills on land with one of the best. Beginners are welcome! He’ll coach fly-tying in between excursions. Bring all your equipment, and don’t forget waders – a must in the icy-cold Boulder!

Mark MacLeod retired from guiding, but he still loves to show people the joy of fishing, and his love of Mimanagish is deep. Doug Pressman, experienced fly fisherman, wrote this last summer: “The stretch of the Boulder River alongside Mimanagish always has plenty of trout – rainbows, brookies and native cuts – and August is a fine month to be stalking them. In two exquisite afternoons I caught nine trout and released seven, all no more than 150 yards of the Full Moon Dining Hall. On the third day I followed along the riverbank as Mark MacLeod expertly waded the same water and perfectly cast his self-tied dry flies into pockets and pools I had never reached, catching one trout after another that he released in seconds. It was the most fun I have ever had fly fishing. It was a rare chance to see the art perfected, firsthand, on an aptly named classic trout stream. I learned a lot from Mark, fast.”

Hiking Leader: Dick Weaver

Hiking…

The Boulder River Valley offers a variety of hiking opportunities. Right next door to Mimanagish is the Placer Basin Trail, with ascents to glorious mountain meadow vistas. The mountains, the river, and the forest are beckoning to you – come discover where your feet can take you!

Dick has hiked around in the Boulder Valley, and has backpacked in the Grand Canyon, Big Bend National Park, the Sangre de Cristos, and the Big Horns, as well as leading canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northern Minnesota. He will lead day-hikes that are within easy striking distance of Mimanagish, at a pace suitable for whoever’s taking part. Dick is trained in Wilderness First Aid.
